The UNAM Ingmar Bergman Special Chair in Film & Theater is an initiative of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with the support of its Cultural Outreach Coordination (Coordinación de Difusión Cultural) and through the collaboration of the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE). The goal of this Chair is to create a space for the promotion of academic reflection and education to strengthen and broaden our culture in relation to film and theater.
The UNAM International Film Festival includes the UNAM Ingmar Bergman Special Chair in Film & Theater to the program of its Second Edition. The idea is to nurture and strengthen film and theater culture among the university community, specialists, and society in general. This is a space devoted to the refection on the role played by theater and film in contemporary life, through a dialogue with outstanding artists and intellectuals renowned for their knowledge of these two art disciplines.

The Art of exposure and contact printing

The National Autonomous University of Mexico, through its Coordination of Cultural Outreach, opens a call for the selection process to participate in the workshop “Hand-Made Cinema. The Art of Exposure and Contact Printing” given by the American artist and filmmaker Eve Heller. The workshop will take place on Monday, February 27, 2012, from 10:00 to 19:00 at the UNAM Film Archives (Filmoteca de la UNAM). The workshop will count with the support of Kodak.
Eve Heller (USA, 1961)
She began studying filmmaking when she was 17, attending the S.U.N.Y. Department of Media Studies at Buffalo. She received her BA in German Literature and Interdisciplinary Studies from Hunter College in 1987 and an MFA in filmmaking from Bard College in 1993. Her award winning work has been widely shown, both in the U.S. and internationally, at such venues as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Collective for Living Cinema, the New York Film Festival, Pacific Film Archives, Toronto’s Cinematheque Ontario, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Louvre and the Austrian Filmmuseum in Vienna. Eve currently lives and works in Vienna, Austria and Hyde Park, New York. (Website AUSTRIAN INDEPENDENT FILM DATABASE)
Workshop Objectives:
To introduce the participants to the art of contact printing and the processing by hand of film footage. The workshop will provide the necessary theoretical tools to understand the nature of the material and the process, as well as the practical aspects of the dynamics involved in the exposure and intervention of 16mm footage. Each student will process and develop 1 meter of film footage using different approaches. At the end of the workshop the films developed by the participants will be edited in order to screen the final result.

Requirements:
All those interested must have experience in the realization of audiovisual work and an interest in cinema as an artistic expression. English comprehension is required (the workshop will be given in English). Students from the fields of Communication, Visual Arts, or those enrolled at a professional film school or in any other discipline related to art and culture are encouraged to apply. It is recommended for the participants to count with a basic knowledge of the laboratory processes and the work with 16mm footage.
